A studio in Los Angeles and Melbourne

about us

Situated on the edge of Melbourne’s vibrant CBD, The Howard Fine Acting Studio Australia was founded after an overwhelming response to Howard’s first ever Australian Master Classes in June 2011.

In the following months, Howard worked closely with the inaugural directors of the Howard Fine Acting Studio Australia to launch the entire HFAS curriculum in Melbourne and the Australian studio began full operation in January 2012. As a provider of yearlong, term-long, and intensive classes, The Studio has had a significant impact on the performance landscape of Australia and has led the way in providing Australian actors with world-class, technique-driven training.

At any one time, for ten months of the year, the Howard Fine Acting Studio Australia hosts a minimum of one member of the LA based faculty, providing Australian actors with access to the award-winning techniques created and refined at the Los Angeles Studio.

I returned from my first trip to Australia on a high from the experience. I literally raved to my colleagues about the talent and the dedication of the Australian actors. The actors were hungry to learn and that is what any true teacher wants. The transformations in a short concentrated period of time were remarkable. It was clear to me that we could achieve the most extraordinary results if we brought the entire course program over and made an investment in the training and development of Australian actors.

Uta Hagen: A challenge for the actor

Uta Hagen's A Challenge for the Actor is recommended reading for anyone considering taking classes at the Howard Fine Acting Studio, and students study it alongside Howard Fine's 'Fine on Acting'. Concepts originating in Hagen's book, such as 'making place' and Hagen's object exercises are studied in depth in many of our classes, making Hagen and her teachings an integral part of the backbone of The Studio.

praise for 'Respect for Acting'

'Uta Hagen is our greatest living actor; she is, moreover, interested and mystified by the presence of talent and its working; her third gift is her passion to communicate the mysteries of the craft to which she has given her life. There are almost no American actors uninfluenced by her.' - Fritz Weaver
