The Howard Fine Acting Approach

The principles taught at the Howard Fine Acting Studio have been developed through the work of Howard Fine and his faculty and informed by generations of actor training.

Students are encouraged to engage deeply with these ideas through ongoing study, practical application and Howard Fine's book Fine on Acting: A Vision of the Craft.

The Principles We Champion

  • Use Yourself | Acting is not about becoming someone else. It is about discovering what connects you to the character and using your own humanity as the foundation of the work.

  • Script Analysis | Actors need more than instinct. They need a practical framework for understanding text, relationships, objectives and circumstance. We teach actors how to investigate a script and make clear, actionable choices.

  • Emotional Authenticity | The goal is not emotion. The goal is truthful behaviour. Actors learn how to create the conditions for genuine emotional responses rather than forcing predetermined results.

  • Self-Reliance | Great training should make actors more independent, not more dependent. We aim to provide actors with tools they can apply long after the class has ended.
